Who I am
I was born into a working class neighbourhood where there was both love & violence. In my neighbourhood many people were experienceing economic violence caused by political decisions. The un-safety and homelessness that my family experienced made it easier to blow trauma through each other rather than "heal".
After working in the homelessness sector for 10 years, I realised that the housing system was a mirror of the violence I had experienced growing up. I took time out, committed to personal healing practises and studied how movements throughout history had got organised, built power and changed their conditions.
I began working alongside communities who shared my experiences of economic violence and housing injustice. This journey led me to my freelance work as an organiser & facilitator. I’ve worked predominantly in the housing and homelessness movement but have also worked in the climate, new economy, migrant justice, survivor, academia movements. I’m gaining a deeper understanding of the intersection between these different movements and am in a place where I am practising a deepening understanding of the global context of our liberatory struggles.
My approach to organising deepens as I learn with communities. My deepest committment is to the homelessness abolition movement. i am seeking to study it's lineage and create a leadership development programme to bring more folks into this movement. You can see more about this project underneath my values below.Values
These values underpin my work. I come back to them often.
Accountability
When I make mistakes, I have grace with myself, I acknowledge, apologise and adapt.
Emergence
I know that change emerges from the relationships we build. I make space for things to emerge from the art of relating.
Transformation
I embrace the grief that facilitates my transformation so I can continually become a transformed version of myself.
Relationality
I notice and embrace the interdependent relationships around me. I know my intentions shape how I am perceived and how others act.
Collectivity
I practise re-distributing the balance between the individual and collective.
Liberatory
I seek to embody liberation rather than domination. Looking after the whole rather than exploiting, dehumanising or othering.
Rooted in Action
I seek to be active, even in my stillness. Change requires the shifting of energy. I practise doing as much as reflecting.
Homelessness Aboltion Project
A world without homelessness is possible - we need committed leaders to hold us in the process of building serious power!
The homelessness abolition project will bring together leaders in the homelessness abolition movement. The vision is to create a space where local, and eventually, movement-wide leaders can build deep relationships and explore questions about how to create a world without homelessness. We will focus on exploring these questions through both a local and global context. We will analyse the social economic and politcal conditions that create homelessness. The space will also facilitate strategic thinking about what actions and forms of power we need to build in order to make a world without homelessness a reality. the leaders will then put this strategic plan into action.
I am currently looking for funding to help get phases one and two of this project off the ground. If you are interested in being part of the project or funding it please e-mail me at hello@beckyross.co.uk
